How to Remove Pet Odor and Spots from Your Carpet

When it comes to pets, or even kids, your home is quick to get a little messy at times. Between spills from bumping a table to unfortunate accidents, common spots (and smells) tend to add up fast. At Zerorez®, we know that sometimes you simply have to take action right away, which is why we want to offer you some helpful tips on DIY pet odor and spot removal to keep your carpets looking and smelling fresh, despite the unavoidable accidents that occur. Let's break it down:

How to Remove a Pet Spot

These kinds of spots tend to be more stubborn to treat. In the event that you don't have time to call Zerorez, we recommend taking these steps for removing pet odor and spots:

  1. Put on gloves for protection.

  2. Remove all solids immediately using a towel, paper towel, or whatever you can. This step is crucial to making sure that odors and spots do not linger.

  3. Heat or boil water, make a 1:1 mixture with distilled white vinegar and spritz it lightly onto the spot. Try not to oversaturate your carpet.

  4. Dab (DO NOT scrub) with a washcloth to lift all liquids before it penetrates the backing of the carpet.

  5. Be sure to use clean portions of the washcloth or grab another one to dab until the spot is gone.

How to Remove Pet Odors

Sometimes, you just don't notice an accident until it's too late. It may have already seeped deeper into your carpet, rendering at-home pet odor removal solutions useless. If you're wondering, "How can I get smells out of my carpet?" here's what we suggest:

  1. Avoid using any air fresheners! While this may seem counterintuitive, air fresheners and store-bought products often contain harsh chemicals that can damage your carpet even more, and they only mask the issue.
  2. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar. Mist it over the top of your carpet, avoiding drenching the carpet. Let it sit for an hour, and repeat.
  3. If that doesn't work, try taking a colander and using it to disperse baking soda over the top of your carpet. Then, walk over the top of it with socks on to push the baking soda deeper into the fibers of the carpet. Let that sit for an hour, vacuum, and repeat if needed.
  4. It is possible that these options simply won't work; in that case, it's time to call in the experts at Zerorez! Getting your carpet cleaned using our pet odor and spot treatments means a deeper clean with long-lasting results!

Why Are Pet Spots and Odors so Difficult to Remove?

We often get asked why one little accident can cause such lasting effects. The answer is simple: the moisture in the carpet fibers feeds the bacteria, and as the bacteria excrete waste, it lets off the ammonia scent we are all too familiar with.

How Does Zerorez Get the Job Done?

With proper equipment, removing the spot and the odor becomes a much easier process. That's why we recommend calling your local Zerorez to take care of pet odors and spots in the most effective way possible: our subfloor extraction!

What Is Subfloor Extraction?

If urine has penetrated the backing of the carpet and padding, we will perform our subfloor extraction. Our process involves:

  1. Flooding only the spot where urine has penetrated the carpet pad using our proprietary urine and odor treatment

  2. Using hot water to rinse the urine out

  3. Using a tool designed to suck urine out of the padding of the carpet

  4. Repeating this process until we don't see any more urine coming out of the padding
